Praise Pours in for Exmoor Ward’s Remarkable Transformation at Musgrove Park Hospital

Located on level one of the Duchess building at Musgrove Park Hospital, Exmoor ward has recently undergone a remarkable transformation under fresh leadership. This general medical ward, which cares for a diverse range of adult patients — including those with additional needs and dementia — has seen notable improvements in care and collaboration.

This summer, Katy Howe took on the role of ward manager, joined by junior manager Mawuta Logo, affectionately known as Jesse. Katy brought valuable experience from her previous position as Somerset NHS Foundation Trust’s clinical skills manager and former junior manager at Musgrove Park’s Wordsworth ward. Together, they have driven a rapid series of positive changes despite initial challenges.

“We care for adults of various ages and needs,” Katy explained. “In a short time, we’ve introduced initiatives to listen to our patients and enhance their experience.” One such innovation is the ‘You Said, We Did’ board— a visible platform for patients' feedback that has already inspired tangible improvements.

The leadership team also established a governance board to openly display audit results, helping the entire ward focus on areas needing enhancement. Weekly spot audits on peripheral venous catheters and wristbands are now standard practice, reinforcing patient safety protocols. Katy also spearheaded a quality improvement project introducing a urinary care bundle, which boosts compliance with trial without catheter (TWOC) procedures and reduces catheter-associated urinary tract infections.

“Aiming to uphold high care standards, reduce complaints, and foster a positive work environment remains our top priority,” said Katy.

Senior healthcare assistant Adeola Fidudusola plays a vital role ensuring patients’ comfort and adherence to tailored care plans addressing feeding, mobility, and personal care. “I enjoy connecting with patients, hearing their stories, and making sure they are comfortable,” Adeola shared. “If someone’s condition worsens, I promptly inform the nurse in charge.”

Student nurse Agnieszka Smolinska appreciates the ward’s welcoming and supportive atmosphere as she learns from experienced colleagues. “Exmoor ward is a vibrant, pleasant place to work, perfect for developing my nursing skills,” she noted.

Patients consistently commend the exceptional care they receive. One remarked, “The staff treat me with so much kindness. If the NHS was judged on Exmoor ward alone, it would be top class.” Another recovering from pneumonia praised the whole team—including cleaners—for their kindness and excellent care.

A patient with complex health issues expressed gratitude for the staff’s dedication, especially nurse Rachel’s persistence in managing difficult injections. “They’ve been brilliant throughout my stay. I’m very happy with their care.”

Exmoor ward’s transformation is a testament to committed leadership, strong teamwork, and a patient-centered approach. The ward continues to set a high standard for compassionate, effective healthcare.
