Poultry Culled as New H5N1 Bird Flu Outbreak Confirmed in Somerset

A bird flu surveillance zone has been established in Somerset following the detection of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus near Evercreech, Frome. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed the outbreak after ill birds were identified on August 28.

All poultry at the affected premises have been humanely culled to prevent further spread of the virus. In addition, a 3km protection zone has been set up around the site to monitor and control the disease.

DEFRA stated: “Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5N1 was confirmed in captive birds near Evercreech, Frome, East Somerset. A 3km captive bird monitoring controlled zone has been declared surrounding the premises, and the affected birds have been humanely culled.”

Within the 3km protection and temporary control zones, strict biosecurity and hygiene measures are mandatory to reduce the risk of transmission.

An Avian Influenza Prevention Zone remains active across the UK, requiring all bird owners to implement enhanced biosecurity protocols. Compliance with these regulations is essential to limit the spread of avian influenza and protect poultry populations nationwide.
