In response to the closure of several bank branches, the town of Portishead in Somerset is set to benefit from a new shared banking hub. LINK, the UK’s leading cash access and ATM network, has announced plans to establish this new facility to ensure continued access to essential banking services.
Following the recent closure announcement by NatWest, LINK has reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding cash access and has included Portishead in its growing network of banking hubs. These hubs offer a communal banking environment, resembling traditional branches but designed to serve customers from any bank.
The upcoming hub will feature a manned counter operated by Post Office employees. Here, customers can withdraw and deposit cash, pay bills, and manage regular transactions regardless of their banking provider. Additionally, private consultation areas will be available, allowing customers to meet with community bankers from their own bank to handle more complex or confidential matters. Staff from different banks will rotate on different days, ensuring a broad range of banking support.

So far, LINK has endorsed 231 banking hubs nationwide, including five in Somerset: Crewkerne, Frome, Keynsham, Nailsea, and Wellington. Today’s announcement also names new hubs planned for Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Cromer, Launceston, and Torquay.
Dr Chris Ashton, Chief Commercial Officer at LINK, comments: “While digital banking is increasingly popular, many people still rely on cash and personal interaction. We’re thrilled to add Portishead to our network. With 160 hubs open across the country, this new facility will be a significant asset for Portishead’s community and high street.”
