The Portbury Hundred, the key route connecting the Somerset town of Portishead to the M5 motorway at Gordano Interchange, will be closed overnight for a three-week period starting tonight. The closure will be in effect from 9pm to 5am on weeknights between September 29 and October 18, with weekends remaining open to traffic.
North Somerset Council’s Travel and Roads team has scheduled these essential carriageway surfacing works to improve and strengthen the road infrastructure. To reduce daytime disruption, the roadworks are taking place at night.
Motorists will need to follow a designated diversion route during the closures, which directs traffic south via Clevedon Road, Beggar Bush Lane, Abbots Leigh Road, and Martcombe Road. This detour extends approximately 20 miles and is expected to add at least 30 minutes to normal travel time.

Cllr Hannah Young, Cabinet Member for Roads at North Somerset Council, emphasized the importance of the project: “These works represent a crucial investment in the future safety and resilience of our road network. We thank everyone for their patience while these necessary improvements are carried out.”
Drivers are advised to plan for the increased journey times and to follow all traffic signs during the night closures to ensure safety.
