Popular Transport App Service Expands Across Somerset

Residents in Taunton, Wellington, Bridgwater, Burnham-on-Sea, and nearby areas can now benefit from the expanded digital, on-demand transport service offered by the Slinky app. This innovative service, funded by the Government’s Bus Service Improvement Plan (BSIP), is part of a wider initiative to enhance transport options throughout Somerset.

The Slinky app allows passengers in Taunton, Wellington, and the Sedgemoor district to book rides quickly and conveniently, providing flexible travel solutions for shopping trips, work commutes, medical appointments, and social visits—especially useful where regular bus services are limited or for those opting to reduce car use.

Thanks to BSIP funding, the service has extended its hours on a trial basis, operating weekdays from 7:30 am to 5:30 pm. Slinky leverages existing bus stops and local landmarks as pick-up points, connecting users to supermarkets, town centers, schools, and healthcare facilities within the coverage area.

For individuals with mobility challenges who cannot reach designated pick-up points, home pick-up can be arranged, ensuring accessibility for all.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, Somerset Council’s Lead Member for Transport and Waste, highlighted the service’s promise for rural areas: “Digital demand-responsive transport has huge potential in a rural county like ours. The success of the Somerton pilot exceeded expectations, and we’re excited to expand the service to more communities.

“Not everyone has easy access to a bus route or a car, and some prefer to leave their car at home. Digital Slinky offers a practical, reliable, affordable, and easy-to-use alternative for everyone.”
