Popular Somerset Beauty Spot Road Closure for Essential Repairs

A vital road through the scenic Somerset beauty spot is set to undergo a ten-week closure for crucial repairs. Cothelstone Road, known for traversing the Quantock Hills national landscape, will be inaccessible starting from January 22. The closure, between the junction with Delta Rise and the junction with Pound Lane, spanning around 80 yards, will pose a significant challenge for motorists, with a 13-mile diversion in place.

The closure aims to facilitate the repair of a retaining wall, and it will be in effect 24/7 for the entire duration. Motorists will need to navigate through alternative routes, adding an additional commute time of up to 13 miles. The route connects the village of Bishop’s Lydeard, northwest of Taunton, with Enmore and neighboring villages west of Bridgwater.

The roadworks will involve the repair of the existing masonry wall on Pound Lane and the construction of a new retaining wall and drainage system opposite the Delta Rise turning. The project aims to conclude by March 29, with access being maintained for homes and businesses in the immediate vicinity of the works.

Residents will have the opportunity to gain insights into the upcoming repairs and pose queries to the experts during a drop-in session at Bishop’s Lydeard Village Hall on January 10, from 4pm to 6pm. The representation from Somerset Council, Karesa Construction, and Fairhurst structural engineers at the session aims to address concerns and provide clarity to the locals.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, the portfolio holder for transport and digital, stressed the necessity of the work and highlighted efforts to minimize disruptions for residents and road users. He encouraged locals to attend the drop-in session and raise any concerns regarding the work or access during the construction period.
