The beloved Exmoor Explorer bus service, formerly known as the Exmoor Coaster, is set to return to Devon and Somerset this summer, beginning Sunday, May 24, just ahead of the Spring Bank Holiday.
Operating throughout the summer months, the service runs regular double-decker buses between Blue Anchor and Ilfracombe, with key stops including Dunster, Minehead, Porlock, Lynmouth, and Combe Martin. The route offers passengers stunning views of Exmoor National Park’s breathtaking landscapes.
David Northey of the Somerset Bus Partnership highlighted the return of the service at the Somerset Council’s bus advisory board meeting on April 28. Chris Comer, Commercial Manager at Stagecoach South West, confirmed that the full timetable will be published soon and emphasized the excitement around resuming operations from their North Devon base.

In May and June, the buses will run with closed roofs, transitioning to open-top services during July and August to enhance the sightseeing experience. Last year’s open-top service was scaled back due to challenges with low-hanging tree branches, but Stagecoach is actively collaborating with Somerset Council and Devon County Council to resolve these issues for this year.
Notably, the Exmoor Explorer will be subject to the government’s bus fare cap, ensuring that any single journey costs no more than £3 per passenger. The service is also dog-friendly and accepts English National Concessionary Travel passes.
Terrance James, Head of Network for First Bus in Somerset, expressed enthusiasm about the service’s return, noting, “The Exmoor Explorer offers both residents and visitors a sustainable and enjoyable way to explore the natural beauty of our region while enjoying a unique travel experience.”
With its combination of convenience, affordability, and spectacular scenery, the Exmoor Explorer continues to be a must-ride for summer travelers in Somerset and Devon.
