Popular Exmoor Bus Service Set to Return to Somerset This Summer

The well-loved Exmoor Explorer bus service is making a comeback to Devon and Somerset at the end of May, offering a scenic and convenient way to explore Exmoor National Park.

Formerly known as the Exmoor Coaster, this summer-only double-decker route connects Blue Anchor to Ilfracombe, passing through picturesque towns including Dunster, Minehead, Porlock, Lynmouth, and Combe Martin. The service delivers breathtaking views and accessible travel across the region.

At a recent meeting of Somerset Council’s bus advisory board on April 28, David Northey from the Somerset Bus Partnership sought clarity from Stagecoach about this year’s service plans. Chris Comer, commercial manager at Stagecoach South West, confirmed the service will resume on Sunday, May 24, just before the Spring Bank Holiday, with the full timetable set to be announced soon.

In May and June, buses will operate with closed roofs, transitioning to open-top double-deckers during July and August to enhance passenger experience. Last summer, the open-top segment faced reductions due to problems with low-hanging tree branches. Stagecoach has since collaborated with Somerset and Devon County Councils to address these obstacles ahead of the upcoming season.

The service will be split into two operational halves: one tender covering Ilfracombe to Lynton in Devon, and the other covering the remaining route in Somerset. Operations will be managed from Stagecoach’s North Devon base.

Importantly, the Exmoor Explorer will comply with the government’s bus fare cap, ensuring no single fare exceeds £3 regardless of journey length. The route welcomes dogs and accepts English national concessionary travel passes, making it accessible and family-friendly.

Terrance James, head of network for First Bus in Somerset, expressed enthusiasm about the service’s revival, highlighting its role in promoting sustainable travel and enabling both residents and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Exmoor.
