Colanna and Small’s, a well-loved coffee shop in Bath, has defended its one-star Food Standards Agency hygiene rating received in February 2025, citing frustration over a year-long delay in securing a reinspection.
The coffee shop’s representative told Somerset Live, “This hygiene report was conducted over a year ago, last February (2025), as you can see noted on the website. We would very much like a more recent and up-to-date inspection and report. We have been waiting ever since for our revisit, which we have regularly been reapplying for on the council food safety portal.”
The team explained that the low rating stemmed from a single requirement regarding the use of a downstairs prep and storage room. They promptly addressed this concern by installing a new floor and renovating the ceiling in that area.

They remain confident in their food safety standards, stating, “Our environments, systems, and processes are all in line with good practice, and we expect a much-improved score upon reassessment.” The shop also described the initial one-star rating as “severe” given their overall compliance.
While the rating identified that Colanna and Small’s handled food hygiene well — including preparation, cooking, reheating, cooling, and storage — and considered the cleanliness and condition of their facilities generally satisfactory, the management of food safety was cited as needing major improvements. This aspect covers staff knowledge, food safety checks, and confidence in maintaining future standards.
Colanna and Small’s has reported that the council has apologized for the way their case was handled and has requested an emergency visit to reassess the shop’s hygiene rating.
