Recent polling by More in Common for The Sunday Times indicates a significant shift in British public opinion on Brexit. Surveying over 2,000 people, the poll found that if a referendum were held today, only 29% would vote to leave the European Union, a sharp decline from the 52% who supported Leave in 2016. Meanwhile, 52% say they would vote to remain, 8% remain undecided, and 11% would choose not to vote.
Nearly half of respondents (49%) support holding a new referendum on EU membership within the next five years, while 37% oppose the idea. This changing sentiment reflects growing debates about the UK’s wider relationship with Europe, including discussions around the nation’s membership in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
The poll reveals that 58% of Britons favor staying in the ECHR, with just 28% supporting withdrawal. Nigel Farage, returning to the political stage, has made leaving the ECHR a priority if elected, and cabinet minister Kemi Badenoch has indicated the Conservative Party plans to review the UK’s commitment to it. Critics argue the ECHR limits the government’s ability to deport individuals on human rights grounds, a stance some politicians find restrictive.

On the other hand, Labour leader and Prime Minister Keir Starmer rejects calls for another Brexit referendum but is pushing for closer trading ties with the EU. He is also actively working to rebuild relationships with European leaders, such as French President Emmanuel Macron, signaling a more cooperative approach compared to previous Tory governments.
Luke Tryl, director of More in Common, commented: “With fewer than three in ten saying they would vote to leave the EU in a referendum today… the days of Europe as a political bogeyman may be on the wane.”
