Police Shut Down Somerset Flat After 18 Months of Drug-Related Disturbances

A flat in Bridgwater’s Wyndham Mews, Silver Street, has been shut down following 18 months of drug-related anti-social behaviour that severely disrupted neighbours’ lives. On Wednesday, August 20, Taunton Magistrates’ Court granted a three-month closure order for the property, following a joint effort by Avon and Somerset Police and the housing association Abri.

The property had become notorious for drug dealing, suspected violence, and frequent nuisance activity. The council reported that the flat received numerous visitors at all hours, many known to police for prior offences, escalating residents’ concerns.

PC Charlotte Bradley highlighted the importance of community cooperation and the partnership with Abri in securing the closure order. “Persistent anti-social behaviour takes a huge toll on people’s wellbeing,” she said. “We encourage the public to report suspicious activities as we work together to create safer neighbourhoods.”

The closure order, effective until 11:59 pm on November 19, makes it an offence for anyone to enter the flat during this period. Authorities are also pursuing a possession order, which could extend the closure.

Neighbourhood Inspector Jon Eamer expressed relief for local residents, noting the closure as “a huge relief” from ongoing crime, noise, and drug dealing. “Thanks to the community’s resilience and reporting, we built a strong case that led to this court order,” he said. “This action sends a clear message that reporting issues can lead to real change.”

Susan Cooper, anti-social behaviour coordinator for Avon and Somerset Police, emphasized their commitment to addressing illegal activities. “This persistent drug use and dealing created unease and seriously impacted residents’ quality of life,” she stated. “We take anti-social behaviour seriously and will continue to use legal measures to protect our communities.”

Together, law enforcement and housing authorities remain dedicated to safeguarding public safety and restoring peace to affected neighbourhoods.
