Avon and Somerset Police have released CCTV footage as part of their ongoing investigation into a “truly horrendous” sexual assault that occurred at Byron Recreation Park in Weston-super-Mare on Saturday, December 6.
Around 9:20 pm, a 12-year-old girl was approached by an unknown man who inappropriately touched her waist and kissed her. The girl bravely escaped and immediately informed a nearby group of women about the incident.
The suspect is described as a tall, slim black male in his early 20s, with facial stubble, dressed in black clothing. Police are seeking public assistance to identify him.

Neighbourhood Chief Inspector Andy Barry praised the girl’s courage and emphasized the importance of her reporting the incident promptly. “The girl did absolutely the right thing by running away, telling responsible adults, and reporting the assault to police. We are also grateful for the women who ensured her immediate safety,” he said.
Specialist detectives have taken detailed statements from the girl and her family and are prioritizing her welfare throughout the investigation.
The recently released CCTV footage shows the suspect crossing Kenn Close. Police are particularly eager to speak with the driver of a vehicle captured passing the man in the footage, hoping dashcam recordings may help identify him.
Chief Inspector Barry added, “We expect there were multiple people in the area that Saturday night and encourage anyone with relevant information to come forward. While no other similar incidents have been reported locally, we understand this news will cause concern. Additional patrols will be conducted to reassure the community.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 5225342867.
