Residents of more than 150 homes in Worle, near Weston-super-Mare, face an uneasy night following a bomb squad operation and police lockdown earlier today, Wednesday 30 September.
A total of 153 properties across at least eight streets have been evacuated as a precaution. A 100-metre cordon remains in place around a property on Becket Road while investigations continue.
Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that a 70-year-old man was arrested at the Becket Road property on suspicion of fraud by false representation, linked to an ongoing fraud inquiry.

During a subsequent search of the premises, officers discovered suspicious substances and items, prompting the deployment of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit. The EOD team has since tested and destroyed some of these items as a safety measure.
North Somerset Council has arranged for affected residents to receive support at the Castle Batch Children’s Centre, which has been set up as a reception centre. Some evacuees have expressed concerns about accessing pets, medication and essential supplies during the extended disruption.
A police spokesperson stated at 9pm: “We are working closely with North Somerset Council to ensure that those evacuated have suitable support and are kept regularly updated at the refuge centre. We appreciate the residents’ understanding and patience and are working diligently to resolve this matter as quickly and safely as possible. Anyone staying with family or friends should continue to follow our official updates on social media.”
At 10pm, police provided a further update confirming that searches were ongoing and that the cordon remained in effect. The operation is continuing to prioritise public safety as it progresses.
Residents are advised to stay informed through official Avon and Somerset Police channels and to comply with any instructions from emergency services.
