Police Provide Update Following Bomb Scare in Weston-super-Mare

Police have released an update after a bomb scare in Weston-super-Mare led to the detention of two men. On Sunday, November 9, at approximately 3:30 pm, officers on patrol discovered a suspicious rucksack on West Street near the seafront.

In response, local authorities swiftly established road closures and a cordon while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit was called to assess the item. Two men—a 39-year-old with no fixed address and a man in his 50s from Weston-super-Mare—were arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance. Both were subsequently released on bail on Monday, November 10.

The EOD confirmed that the suspicious item was harmless, allowing West Street to reopen at 9:10 pm the same evening. Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police stated: “Patrolling officers found the bag just before 3:30 pm on Sunday, November 9. As a precaution, a cordon was established while the Explosive Ordnance Disposal unit assessed the object. Following initial enquiries, two men were arrested on suspicion of causing a public nuisance. The EOD confirmed the item was harmless, and the road was reopened by 9:10 pm.”
