Police Launch Investigation After Man Found Dead in River Avon Following Police Contact

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation into the death of a 41-year-old man who fell from a bridge over the River Avon in Chippenham shortly after police engagement.

Wiltshire Police responded to welfare concerns early on March 31, arriving at the Town Bridge area where the man was last seen. Despite efforts, his body was recovered from the river later that day.

Due to prior interactions between officers and the man that morning, Wiltshire Police made a mandatory referral to the IOPC. The independent body is now examining the circumstances surrounding police involvement.

IOPC Director Derrick Campbell stated, “Wiltshire Police first attended the man’s residence around 12:30 a.m. after a 999 call raised mental health concerns. Officers engaged with him again at 1:48 a.m. following reports from the public of a barefoot man in a dressing gown walking in Chippenham High Street.”

The investigation will review all police contacts, decisions made, body-worn camera footage, CCTV, and communication records to ensure a thorough assessment of the events.

Campbell extended condolences to the man’s family and confirmed ongoing liaison with his next of kin to provide support during this difficult time.
