The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has initiated an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 41-year-old man who fell from a bridge into the River Avon in Chippenham, following contact with Wiltshire Police.
Wiltshire Police responded to welfare concerns early on March 31 near the Town Bridge area. After police engagement, the man tragically fell into the river, where his body was later recovered.
Due to the interaction between the police and the man prior to his death, Wiltshire Police promptly made a mandatory referral to the IOPC, which has now commenced an independent inquiry into the events and police conduct on that day.

IOPC Director Derrick Campbell stated, “Wiltshire Police officers first attended the man’s residence around 12:30 a.m. after a 999 call expressing concern over his mental health. Officers made further contact with him at 1:48 a.m. following reports from the public of a barefoot man in a dressing gown in Chippenham High Street.”
The ongoing investigation will thoroughly examine officer body-worn camera footage, CCTV recordings, and radio communications to understand the nature of police involvement and the decisions made during both interactions.
Campbell added, “Our sympathies are with the man’s family during this difficult time. We are maintaining communication with his next of kin to support them through the investigative process.”
