A dispersal zone is set to be enforced in Taunton tomorrow, Saturday, July 25, ahead of a planned protest and counter-protest starting at 11am in the town centre.
Avon and Somerset Police have implemented a detailed plan to manage both events and maintain public order. Under Section 34 of the Antisocial Behaviour and Policing Act 2014, a dispersal zone will operate from 8am to 6pm, allowing officers to move on individuals or groups causing, or likely to cause, harassment, alarm, or distress.
In addition, police will exercise enhanced powers granted through Section 60AA of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act, enabling officers to require the removal of face coverings if they have reason to believe the mask is worn to conceal identity. These powers will be in force alongside the dispersal zone during the same hours.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Police emphasized: “Officers will facilitate participants' right to free speech and ensure the safety of all attendees and the public. However, criminality, disorder, or any form of hate will not be tolerated.”
Neighbourhood policing Sergeant Kat Forrest added: “We anticipate some disruption to the town centre’s road network during the march, and advise the public to plan their journeys accordingly. Peaceful protest is a cornerstone of democracy, and we are committed to supporting lawful expressions of opinion while maintaining impartiality.
“Our priority is preventing violence, disorder, and criminal acts. Where necessary and authorized, officers will employ Section 60AA powers to require removal of face coverings used to conceal identity. Policing protests is complex and requires adaptive tactics, but our focus remains on safety and lawful demonstration.”
