Police in Avon and Somerset are set to receive additional powers ahead of a planned protest in Taunton town centre this weekend. The demonstration is scheduled to commence at midday on Saturday, 29 August.
Residents have been advised to anticipate a significant police presence throughout the town as officers work to facilitate a peaceful protest and ensure the safety of participants and the broader public.
A dispersal zone has been established under section 34 of the Antisocial Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, in effect from 8am to 8pm on the day of the protest. Such zones allow police to prevent disorder by empowering officers to move on any individuals likely to cause harassment, alarm, or distress.

PCSO Supervisor Sam Bushen, from the Taunton neighbourhood policing team, commented: “Although protests of this scale are uncommon in Taunton, Avon and Somerset Police have extensive experience in managing such events safely. We have carefully developed plans to protect everyone’s safety while keeping disruption to the community to a minimum.”
He added, “Peaceful protest is a vital part of our democracy, but we will take appropriate action if any criminal activity occurs. Our neighbourhood officers will be present in the town centre throughout the day and are available to address any concerns.”
