Police Cordon Established at Somerset Park After Discovery of Unexploded Ordnance

A section of Apex Park in Burnham-on-Sea has been cordoned off following the discovery of suspected unexploded ordnance during recent construction work. Somerset Council and Avon and Somerset Police have sealed off an area on the east side of the park’s lake to ensure public safety.

The ordnance fragments, believed to include mortar shells and a grenade dating back to the Second World War, were uncovered on Thursday. An Army bomb disposal team was promptly called to the scene to assess the situation. In response, a 50-metre safety cordon was established, and the council is in the process of erecting fencing to secure the area temporarily.

Somerset Council has announced plans to engage a specialist contractor to thoroughly inspect and remove any remaining ordnance from the site. Construction activities have been suspended as a precautionary measure until the site is deemed safe.

Visitors are strongly advised to avoid entering the cordoned-off zone. Despite these developments, scheduled events such as the Burnham and Highbridge Parkrun are set to continue as planned, with potential minor adjustments to the running route. Organizers have assured participants that the exclusion zone will not affect the main course but recommend caution when warming up near the restricted area.

Somerset Council and the police continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates following the specialist contractor’s assessment.
