Police Attacked During School Leaver Celebrations in Midsomer Norton

Four police officers were assaulted while responding to reports of disorder at a large gathering of school leavers in Midsomer Norton on May 23. Around 200 youngsters had assembled off Withies Lane to celebrate the end of their exams when officers arrived at approximately 8:30 p.m.

According to Avon and Somerset police, multiple complaints of anti-social behaviour prompted the police response. A spokesperson explained, “While trying to engage with the group, a small number of individuals pushed, punched, and spat at the officers.”

Additional officers arrived on the scene, leading to the arrest of three teenagers aged 13, 15, and 16 on suspicion of assaulting emergency workers. They have since been released on bail.

A Section 35 dispersal order has been imposed across all of Midsomer Norton and remains active. Police have increased patrols in the area to prevent further disturbances.

Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported among the officers or the group involved. PCSO Supervisor Katie Allwood-Coppin commented, “Most attendees were cooperative and present to celebrate their exam results. However, a small minority exhibited unacceptable violence. While the injuries to officers were minor, such hostility is unacceptable and will not be tolerated.”

Authorities have urged parents and carers to stay informed about their children’s whereabouts and companions during such events. An investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact police on 101, referencing incident number 5225144608.
