Plans Unveiled to Rebuild Industrial Units Destroyed in Somerset Fire

A year after a massive fire severely damaged parts of the Haydon Industrial Estate near Radstock, Somerset, plans are now underway to rebuild the affected industrial units.

The fire, which erupted in March 2025, sent thick smoke billowing miles across the region and required emergency response from both Avon Fire and Rescue Service and Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. Firefighters utilized 24 breathing apparatuses to tackle the intense blaze. Fortunately, all workers on site were evacuated safely, though one individual was hospitalized.

The blaze destroyed two units that housed a workshop specializing in spray painting articulated lorry cabs and an MOT inspection centre. Notably, the paint spraying business has already resumed operations from a location in Somerton.

Now, Bath and North East Somerset Council has received two near-identical planning applications to rebuild units 8 and 8a at the estate. Both proposals emphasize replicating the original footprint, scale, height, and overall appearance, ensuring the new buildings match the former structures precisely. The applications state the goal is to restore the established industrial estate layout without introducing any significant changes or new designs.

Clearing the fire debris will be managed by a specialist waste contractor, strictly following health and safety regulations to prepare the site for reconstruction.
