Plans Unveiled for Major New Service Station and Drive-Thrus on the A303 Near Yeovil

A major new service station featuring multiple food outlets and drive-thrus is proposed for the A303 near Yeovil, potentially transforming the area for motorists and creating significant local employment. Currently, travelers stopping near Yeovil have limited facilities, such as the Cartgate Lodge Café, toilets, and picnic area accessible via the Cartgate roundabout between Yeovil and Martock.

Welcome Break Services Ltd., the company behind new developments at M5’s junction 24 near Bridgwater, has submitted plans for a modern, expanded service area west of the existing site. This development includes popular brands such as Greggs, Taco Bell, and KFC—with KFC offering a drive-thru option—as well as plans for two separate drive-thru units for a coffee shop (like Costa or Starbucks) and a fast-food restaurant (such as McDonald’s).

Access to the new services will use the existing roundabout, with a redesigned and extended spur road running just north of the former Yeovil to Taunton railway line. The centerpiece will be a large amenity building near the petrol pumps featuring public seating, toilets, showers, and a gaming zone.

Parking provisions are comprehensive, offering 145 car spaces—including nine for disabled drivers—24 electric vehicle charging points, 11 motorcycle spaces, and three dedicated caravan spots. Additionally, 34 bays for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) will include three separate filling pumps apart from the main petrol station.

ADS Design, representing the developer, highlighted the project’s focus on safety, comfort, and architectural merit. Their spokesperson said, “This trunk road service area is designed to meet local needs while providing a modern facility that encourages drivers to take regular breaks, reducing fatigue-related accidents. The development will serve as a safe refuge for motorists and inject fresh economic vitality into the region.”

With the potential to create up to 90 jobs, the project promises a boost to Yeovil’s local economy, though the exact number of full-time positions remains unclear. Somerset Council is expected to decide on the plans before Christmas. Given the scale of the development, the decision will likely be made publicly by the council’s planning committee south, responsible for major applications in the former South Somerset area, rather than by delegated officers.
