Plans to Enhance Security at Taunton Green Space Dismissed Just Before Traveller Encampment

Somerset Council decided against implementing additional deterrent measures to prevent travellers from camping on Stoney Furlong Field in Taunton, less than 24 hours before eight caravans arrived on the site.

Located west of Nerrols Drive in the Priorswood area, near Nerrols Primary School, Stoney Furlong Field has been a repeated target for unauthorised encampments. Previously, bollards were installed following an unauthorised occupation in summer 2025 to restrict vehicle access. At a recent executive meeting, Taunton North division member Tom Deakin requested further actions such as stone boulders to enhance the site’s protection.

The council’s response was that the current bollards “were working” effectively, and no additional measures were planned at this time. However, soon after, the field was occupied by at least eight caravans, with reports confirming some bollards were cut through to allow access.

Tom Deakin, who also chairs Taunton Town Council, expressed his concerns during the meeting: “Local residents have experienced repeated unauthorised encampments on Stoney Furlong green space. While the bollards were a positive start, some vulnerable access points remain. More needs to be done to discourage further encampments and reassure the community.”

Council leader Bill Revans, speaking in place of Councillor Federica Smith-Roberts, assured that the bollards had prevented encampments since their installation, indicating their effectiveness. He said, “We will continue to monitor the situation and consider alternative measures if necessary.”

The recent travellers arrived on May 7, reportedly moving from Greenway Recreation Ground on Leslie Avenue, from which they had departed as confirmed by the town council. Councillor Giuseppe Fraschini of Maidenbrook ward noted that some travellers have since left the site, with Somerset Council issuing notice to quit to the remaining occupants.

Fraschini also revealed that Somerset Council is developing plans for a dedicated travellers site in the Taunton area. Such a site would provide the council with stronger authority to swiftly remove unauthorised encampments.

Mr Deakin described the latest encampment as “extremely disappointing,” highlighting damage to bollards and fencing. “Residents deserve better protection for this valuable green space. I will continue to urge Somerset Council to pursue more robust, long-term solutions.”
