Plans for 40-Metre Cable Bridge Over River Avon Get Green Light

Plans for a striking 40-metre cable bridge spanning the River Avon in Keynsham have received official approval. The new structure will be built at Durley Lane, close to the Somerdale estate, and is designed to accommodate both pedestrians and cyclists.

Presented by Bath and North East Somerset Council, the project gained approval from South Gloucestershire Council on Tuesday, July 8. Construction must commence within the next three years to meet regulatory deadlines.

The proposal received widespread community support during the consultation phase, with 22 positive comments and no objections. Residents praised the bridge for addressing a longstanding gap in local infrastructure. One Hanham resident described it as a “long overdue improvement,” while another welcomed the bridge’s wheelchair accessibility.

Cycling enthusiasts also expressed enthusiasm, highlighting how the bridge would provide a safer route connecting Keynsham to Bristol and Bath. One local remarked, “This bridge is a fantastic idea! It will finally allow more people to cycle safely rather than navigating the busy Keynsham road.”

With few crossings over the River Avon available, the bridge promises to enhance connectivity for commuters on foot and by bike. A community member summed up the sentiment: “I’ve always searched for a better way to commute to Bristol and Hanham from Keynsham, but the river has been a barrier. This bridge will be a game-changer. Please make it happen!”
