Persimmon Homes Severn Valley has secured planning approval to build 323 new homes in Bridgwater, Somerset. The Somerset Council’s North Area Planning Committee has granted permission for a hybrid application covering both detailed plans for the first phase of 111 homes and outline approval for a second phase of 212 properties, located south of Quantock Road in the western part of the town.
The new homes will include a mix of two, three, and four-bedroom houses, all designed to be zero carbon-ready, supporting sustainability goals. Importantly, 10% of the homes will be allocated to a local housing association, aimed at addressing the Council’s housing waiting list and providing affordable housing options.
In addition to housing, financial contributions from Persimmon will support the local community with £2 million dedicated to education services and another £2 million earmarked for off-site affordable housing initiatives. Further investments include £479,000 for off-site highway improvements, £18,000 for a travel plan, and £22,250 towards a neighbourhood centre featured in the development.

The project also includes Community Infrastructure Levy payments, with £514,171 expected from the first phase and an estimated £1,016,691 from the potential second phase. Recreational amenities incorporate two play areas—one in each phase—enhancing family-friendly infrastructure.
Environmental sustainability is a key feature of the development. Plans include sustainable drainage systems with two attenuation ponds, the preservation of existing trees and hedgerows, and a proposed dark corridor in phase one to support local wildlife. Walking routes will connect both phases, promoting active travel and community cohesion.
Claire Burton, Managing Director of Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “We are pleased to have received planning committee approval from Somerset Council for our development in Bridgwater. This scheme will significantly increase housing supply while delivering much-needed investment in local services and infrastructure.
“Working closely with the local authority, we have ensured that our community contributions serve the best interests of residents. We look forward to commencing construction on phase one, progressing the reserved matters application for phase two, and leaving a positive, lasting legacy in west Bridgwater.”
