Performer Falls from Carnival Cart as Shepton Mallet Procession Pauses

Shepton Mallet Carnival was temporarily halted for nearly an hour on Wednesday, November 12, after a performer fell from one of the carnival carts during the procession. Emergency services, including police officers and a St John’s Ambulance crew, quickly navigated through the crowd to reach the injured individual.

The incident occurred around 8:40 pm, roughly an hour after the parade had set off from Cannard’s Grave Road. Details about which specific cart was involved or the exact location of the fall along the route have not yet been confirmed.

Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that the injured participant received first aid at the scene before being transported to the hospital. Authorities stated the person’s injuries are not considered life-threatening or life-changing.

A witness reported that the procession was stopped for close to an hour before resuming. During the pause, the lead cart, featuring Newmarket Carnival Club’s Ghost Chickens, entertained onlookers with music, helping maintain the festive atmosphere.

The procession restarted around 9:30 pm after the situation was managed safely.

Avon and Somerset Police expressed gratitude to the public and carnival participants for their patience. They reiterated that officers responded promptly to the road-related incident and ensured the injured person received necessary care before the parade continued.
