Bath Rugby’s aspirations for a home play-off semi-final suffered a setback as they narrowly lost 21-19 to West Country rivals Bristol Bears in front of a buzzing Ashton Gate crowd.
Bath struck first on the 20-minute mark, exploiting a gap in the Bears’ defence while under intense pressure near the tryline. Minutes later, scrum-half Ben Spencer executed a clever dummy, broke free from the ruck, and delivered a perfect pass to Guy Pepper, who dived over to double Bath’s lead.
Bristol responded before halftime with Fitz Harding’s deft finish after a swift tap and go. The visitors reclaimed momentum near the break thanks to Thomas du Toit, who powered through two defenders in tandem with Ethan Staddon to extend Bath’s advantage to 12 points at halftime.
