As autumn paints the landscape with rich amber and scarlet hues and temperatures dip, many of us dream of escaping the gloomy transition to winter. Yet an unforgettable getaway doesn’t always mean heading abroad. Sometimes, the most magical retreats are right on our doorstep.
Just 30 minutes from London lies the Crowne Plaza in Gerrards Cross, tucked between the charming market town of Beaconsfield and the picturesque countryside of Buckinghamshire. My mother and I embarked on a staycation here, escaping the clamor of city life for a peaceful, luxurious break—and it felt like stepping into a modern-day fairy tale.
The hotel’s impressive façade, highlighted by an elegant water feature, hints at the indulgence inside. Guests in plush white robes floated past us, their contentment unmistakable. Inside, the reception area’s refined, contemporary design is warmed by a striking crimson tree that offers a perfect photo backdrop. The inviting botanical scent in the air adds a refreshing touch that sets the tone for the visit.

Our spacious room, valued at £94 per night for a standard option, offered twin double beds, a large flat-screen TV, tea and coffee facilities, and a serene courtyard view. Comfort was paramount, from the plush white robes to the immaculate bathroom, equipped with a rain shower and luxurious toiletries. Despite a minor issue with the bathwater temperature in the evening, restful sleep was guaranteed thanks to a perfectly balanced mattress and cozy duvet.
Dining at the hotel’s restaurant matched the setting’s elegance. Earthy autumnal tones created a warm ambiance as we sampled starters like juicy beef, pork, and caramelised onion meatballs and crispy salt and pepper chicken wings. Main courses of glazed confit pork belly and tender steak frites satisfied our appetite, while an included full English breakfast featuring pastries, fresh fruit, and yoghurt made mornings a delight.
The crowning jewel of the stay was the spa. Included in room bookings, it offers access to a serene swimming pool, a soothing hot tub, a sauna, and a steam room. Day passes start at £49, and the autumn escape package at £75 adds a two-course lunch and a complimentary candle. My very first hot tub experience left me feeling rejuvenated, and the 55-minute Swedish massage was a revelation. The therapist showed great care, especially considering my mother’s recent injury and emotional loss. The massage not only eased physical tension but also provided a rare moment of emotional release and deep relaxation.
Though massages at £95 each may be a rare treat, the experience reaffirmed how essential self-care is, reminding us to cherish moments with loved ones. As my mum and I relaxed in the tranquil lounge afterward, it was clear this staycation delivered more than just rest—it offered healing, connection, and serenity.
