Starting from 6 April, certain pensioners could receive an extra £344 every four weeks, thanks to changes announced by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). This increase is part of the annual uprating of the disability element within the Pension Credit benefit.
Pension Credit is a means-tested, tax-free benefit designed to help pensioners with low incomes manage their essential living costs. It guarantees a minimum weekly income of £227.10 for singles or £346.60 for couples.
In addition to the standard amount, eligible pensioners can claim the disability element of Pension Credit. Currently, this element provides £82.90 per week, which totals £331.60 every four weeks. From April, this will rise to £86.05 weekly — approximately £344.20 over four weeks.

The disability element is available to pensioners who receive certain qualifying benefits, including the middle or highest rate of the care component of the Scottish Adult Disability Living Allowance (ADP), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Attendance Allowance.
Couples where at least one partner receives a qualifying disability benefit will see their additional payment increase from £82.90 to £86.05 weekly. If both partners qualify, this combined amount will rise from £165.80 to £172.10 weekly.
Carers are also set to benefit; those receiving Carer’s Allowance or Carer Support Payment will see their extra Pension Credit amount increase from £46.40 to £48.15 weekly.
To check eligibility or estimate payments, pensioners and their families can use the online Pension Credit calculator available on GOV.UK. Claims can be made up to four months before reaching State Pension age, and backdated for up to three months, ensuring potential retroactive payments.
Applications can be submitted online or by calling the Pension Credit helpline on 0800 99 1234, available Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. Claimants will need details of income, savings, and investments to complete their application.
