Parkinson’s Friends Unite for Charity Walk Supporting Vital Nurse Care

A close-knit group of friends who met through Parkinson’s-specific exercise classes in Bristol are gearing up to participate in a meaningful charity walk—and they’re encouraging others to join their cause.

Jenny, Simon, Greg, and Dave connected through the PD Warrior programme in the West Country, bonding over shared challenges and exercises designed for people living with Parkinson’s disease. This Saturday, September 6, they will step forward together at the Walk for Parkinson’s event held at Newton St Loe, near Bath.

The walk supports Parkinson’s UK’s Nurse Appeal, an initiative aiming to raise £9 million over three years to fund specialist nurses and care staff. These professionals are essential for the 166,000 individuals living with Parkinson’s in the UK. Yet, alarmingly, over 30,000 people with Parkinson’s currently lack access to this vital support.

Jenny, diagnosed with Parkinson’s in 2018 and a Bristol resident, explained their motivation: “We’re walking to raise money to fund services that people with Parkinson’s desperately need. The NHS alone can’t keep up with growing demand, so charities like Parkinson’s UK are crucial in filling that gap.

“It’s also important to raise awareness. Many still think Parkinson’s just causes a tremor or only affects older adults, but that’s simply wrong. And, of course, it’s a wonderful excuse to enjoy a pint at the pub afterward!”

The friends participate in a variety of exercise sessions—from spin classes to physiotherapy-based activities—which have not only helped maintain their physical health but also built a strong community. “These classes helped us form real friendships and support each other through our journeys,” said Jenny. “That sense of connection makes all the difference.”

Walk participants can choose between a fully accessible 1.5-mile route or a more challenging 5-mile walk through the scenic Bath Spa University grounds and Newton St Loe estate. Adult registration costs £12, while under-18s can join free. Registration closes on Sunday, August 31.

Karen Safe, Parkinson’s UK community fundraiser for the West Country, said: “Jenny, Simon, Greg, and Dave’s commitment is truly inspiring. By taking part in Walk for Parkinson’s 2025, everyone helps fund specialist care vital to improving the lives of people with Parkinson’s.”

Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition with over 40 symptoms, including pain, anxiety, and tremors. In the UK, someone is diagnosed with Parkinson’s every 20 minutes. Globally, cases are expected to double to 25 million by 2050.
