A family from Weston is participating in the upcoming Moonlight Memory Walk in Clevedon to raise funds for Children’s Hospice South West (CHSW) in honor of their late daughter, Phoebe. Phoebe, who passed away at age seven, was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome, a rare neurological disorder that limited her life and required complex care.
From just three years old, Phoebe received care and support at CHSW’s Charlton Farm children’s hospice in Wraxall. Her parents, Jessica and Josh, first noticed signs of neurological issues when Phoebe, as a newborn, began choking on milk and required tube feeding. After years of tests, her diagnosis led to a referral to Charlton Farm where the family found compassionate and expert support.
CHSW provides vital specialist services including short breaks, sibling support, and end-of-life care for children with life-limiting conditions. Despite an annual cost of £14 million, less than 11% of the charity’s funding comes from the government, relying heavily on public donations to sustain its essential work.

Josh recalls, “The first time we came to Charlton Farm it was just amazing — a safe place where we could finally relax knowing Phoebe was cared for by a dedicated team.” The hospice became a haven for the entire family, including Phoebe’s brother Harvey and baby sister Tilleigh. It was their second home where they made precious memories from respite breaks to Phoebe’s final days.
Jessica shares, “Being with Phoebe until the end in such a peaceful, non-clinical setting allowed us to cherish every moment—cuddling her, making handprints, and simply spending time together as a family.” Phoebe’s warm smile and joyful spirit left a lasting impact on everyone who knew her.
Motivated by the difference CHSW made in their lives, Jessica and Josh are fundraising to ensure continued support for other families facing similar challenges. The Moonlight Memory Walk on Saturday, October 4, at Salthouse Fields offers the community a chance to come together to remember loved ones and raise vital funds for CHSW.
The event features a heartfelt memory ceremony, a peaceful 5km walk along Clevedon’s seafront, reflection points, live music, and activities honoring those who have passed. For the first time, children of all ages are welcome to participate.
Hollie Thorogood, Events Fundraiser at CHSW, says, “Salthouse Fields is a beautiful, serene location that we hope will provide comfort and inspiration for all participants.”
