Paignton Zoo, one of Devon’s largest and most beloved visitor attractions, has recently implemented a new admission fee for toddlers aged 1 to 2 years. This change, introduced by the Wild Planet Trust—which also manages Newquay Zoo—is part of a broader effort to cope with escalating operational costs.
Previously, children under three were admitted free of charge, making the introduction of a £2.50 fee a surprise to many visitors. One guest shared her reaction with DevonLive, saying, “There were no warnings or advertising about it. I only found out at the ticket gate last week.”
The zoo, set on an 80-acre site and home to over 2,000 animals, has faced significant financial challenges following the pandemic. In June of last year, it disclosed severe monetary difficulties that led to job cuts as part of efforts to secure its future. The Trust emphasized that a reevaluation of pricing was necessary to maintain financial sustainability.

A spokesperson confirmed the introduction of the toddler fee, explaining: “We recognize this may come as a surprise to some returning visitors, but this change helps offset increased operational costs while keeping our pricing reasonable. Adult tickets start at £23.95, child tickets (ages 3-15) are £17.95, and the toddler fee reflects good value.”
Importantly, annual members are exempt from this fee, encouraging families who visit frequently to consider membership, which offers unlimited visits and additional perks.
The spokesperson added, “As one of the South West’s leading visitor attractions, we’re dedicated to maintaining high standards and ensuring accessibility and affordability for families. Feedback from visitors is welcome to help us improve the experience.”
A mother responding to the new charge expressed understanding: “It’s a small amount, so it won’t stop me from visiting. We know it costs a lot to care for the animals, and as a single mom on a budget, every penny counts, but we like to support the zoo.”
Paignton Zoo is nationally recognized, ranking as the fourth-best zoo in the UK based on admission prices, visitor reviews, and species variety. Recent highlights include the addition of two prehistoric birds, a Wallaby Walkthrough, and the reopening of the popular Crocodile Swamp after successful fundraising efforts.
