A 17-year-old dog named Cookie endured immense suffering after his owner neglected to seek veterinary care for a massive, untreated tumour. The dog’s plight was described by a vet who found him “severely underweight” and “crying in pain” when examined.
RSPCA received a report after a veterinarian expressed serious welfare concerns about Cookie’s condition. Despite a prior recommendation for urgent euthanasia, Cookie’s owners delayed treatment. Upon examination by a second vet, Cookie was found collapsed on one side and bearing a large, necrotic tumour on his left leg that had broken down into open wounds.
The vet’s report detailed: “Cookie had a large firm mass on his left leg, which had deteriorated with necrotic tissue and open sores. He cried in pain when the mass was touched or lifted.” The vet concluded that euthanasia was the kindest option, given Cookie’s level of pain and poor condition, which indicated he had been suffering for months.

The tumour was first noted 10 months prior, but no efforts were made to treat or investigate it further, leading to chronic suffering.
Christian Sorin Andrei, 49, from Weston Super Mare, pleaded guilty to an animal welfare offence after an investigation by the RSPCA. While it was noted that he provided “well-intentioned but incompetent care,” he acknowledged that veterinary attention should have been sought sooner. Consequently, he received a ten-year ban on owning animals, a £727 fine, £1,000 in costs, and a £291 victim surcharge at North Somerset Magistrates' Court on July 11.
His wife, Irina-Lucia Andrei, was also convicted in her absence, with a warrant issued for her arrest.
RSPCA Inspector Dan Hatfield emphasized the responsibility pet owners have to ensure their animals' health and safety: “Pets rely entirely on their owners for care and protection. Veterinary care is essential when health issues arise. We urge all pet owners to seek immediate veterinary attention when their animals are in pain or distress.”
