KDC/One, a major employer in Wellington and owner of the historic Swallowfield cosmetics site, has announced plans to close its factory in the town, jeopardizing over 250 jobs. The company revealed its intention to transfer operations to its Irvine facility in Scotland, describing the decision as a “difficult” but necessary move.
The Wellington site, which has been part of the community for nearly 150 years and recently received significant investment throughout 2023 and 2024, faces an uncertain future as KDC/One prepares to begin formal consultations with employees. The company has offered relocation possibilities for affected staff but has not ruled out redundancies.
Gideon Amos, the Member of Parliament for Taunton and Wellington, expressed “shock and dismay” at the announcement. He has reached out directly to KDC/One’s president and chief executive, Nicholas Whitley, urging the firm to reconsider and explore options to keep the business running locally.

“After nearly 150 years and recent investments in the Wellington site, this proposal is unexpected,” Amos stated. “I am asking why the company is not considering selling the business as a going concern rather than closing it down. With over 250 jobs at stake, the company should prioritize the welfare of its employees and the local community.”
In parallel, Amos has consulted with Cllr Bill Revans, leader of Somerset Council, who has directed the Economic Development team to intensify support for workers affected by the potential closure.
“If the closure proceeds, we must ensure all measures are taken to assist those impacted,” Amos said, highlighting the importance of robust community and governmental support during this challenging transition.
