Over 200 Somerset Schools Close Amid Extreme Heat Warning

More than 200 schools across Somerset are now confirmed closed as the region braces for an extreme heat warning set to take effect tomorrow. A total of 201 schools in Somerset, Bath, and North East Somerset have shut their doors ahead of the red heat alert starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24.

Currently, an amber warning is already in place, issued on Monday, June 22, with forecasts predicting temperatures soaring above 37°C in the shade. In some areas, temperatures could climb between 38°C and 40°C, posing significant health risks.

Schools have been responding proactively, adjusting their operations based on guidance from the Met Office and educational authorities to ensure student safety. Among the impacts of the extreme heat, one notable school in Bath, St Mark’s School, announced the postponement of its Year 11 Prom, originally scheduled for Thursday evening. The event has been rescheduled for Wednesday, July 8.

A spokesperson for St Mark’s School stated, “Due to the extreme heat and school closures, the difficult decision has been made to postpone the Year 11 Prom. We sincerely apologize for the delay but prioritise the safety and comfort of our students on their special night. We appreciate everyone’s support and understanding during this challenging time.”

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has warned of severe impacts across the region, highlighting the main health risks linked to heatwaves: dehydration, overheating, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. As temperatures continue to climb, the community remains vigilant in adapting to these exceptional weather conditions.
