With the UK experiencing soaring temperatures nearing 40°C in some regions, experts are emphasizing the importance of proper hydration, especially for the more than 1.5 million people using GLP-1 weight-loss medications like Mounjaro and Wegovy through private providers. These medications often suppress appetite, which can inadvertently cause reduced fluid intake, increasing the risk of dehydration.
Laura Perez, Clinical Nutrition Lead at Simple Online Pharmacy, explains, “In hot weather, our need for fluids rises due to increased sweating. If you’re on GLP-1 medications, you might be consuming less food and drink overall, so you need to consciously ensure you’re staying hydrated.”
She stresses the importance of proactive drinking: “Don’t wait until you feel thirsty to drink—thirst usually signals that you’re already mildly dehydrated.”

Here are five warning signs of dehydration to monitor:
-
Dizziness or Lightheadedness
Feeling dizzy, especially when standing or moving, can indicate low blood volume caused by dehydration, which can affect circulation.
-
Headaches
While headaches have many causes, dehydration is a common and often overlooked trigger.
-
Fatigue and Low Energy
Hot weather alone can sap energy, but dehydration may worsen feelings of tiredness and impair concentration.
-
Constipation
Known as a side effect of GLP-1 medications, constipation can be exacerbated by insufficient fluid intake, making hydration all the more crucial.
-
Dark Urine
Darker-than-usual urine is a simple visual cue that you need to drink more. Ideally, urine should be pale yellow, though some medications can alter its color.
Laura advises sipping fluids regularly throughout the day rather than relying on thirst cues. Incorporating water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, strawberries, and yoghurt can also boost hydration.
“Staying hydrated is easier than many think,” she notes. “Carry a water bottle, set reminders, and include hydrating foods to keep your fluid levels stable during hot conditions.”
While plain water remains the best choice, milk, milk alternatives, sugar-free squash, sparkling water, and herbal teas also contribute to hydration. Adding fruit infusions can enhance water’s flavor for those who find plain water unappealing.
“Everyone forgets to drink sometimes, so visual reminders and little habits can make a big difference. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s making sure your body has the fluids it needs, especially during heatwaves.”
