‘Outstanding’ Fish and Chip Shop Near Bristol and Bath Closes Permanently

Farrington’s Farm Shop & Café in Somerset, a favorite destination near Bristol and Bath known for its play barn and pick-your-own activities, has announced the permanent closure of its on-site fish and chip shop.

Farrington’s Fish & Chip Shop, celebrated by visitors for its gluten-free options and famous triple-cooked chips, has shut its doors with immediate effect. The news has been met with an outpouring of sadness and support from loyal customers.

In a heartfelt Facebook post, the Farrington’s team shared: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news that Farrington’s Fish & Chip Shop is now closed permanently. Despite the hard work from our incredible Fish & Chip Shop team, ongoing financial pressures mean it is no longer viable to continue operating. These are challenging times for rural hospitality, and we know we are not alone in facing them.”

The farm shop assured patrons that the rest of the site remains open and unaffected, continuing to serve its popular café offerings, including breakfast, lunch, cakes, afternoon teas, and the Playbarn Café—an ideal spot for parents to relax while their children enjoy soft play.

Regular customers expressed their disappointment. One reflected fondly, “Sad times! Wonderful memories of my eldest growing up and spending weekends at the park with fish and chips!” Another lamented, “So sad to hear this. You did the best triple-cooked chips! Wish you all the best.” Many also highlighted the loss of one of the few local gluten-free fish and chip options: “Absolutely gutted as it was the only local place to do gluten free.”

Local residents also chimed in with praise: “Your food was always outstanding, and it was so nice to have a real fish and chip shop in the village. You’ll be very much missed. Good luck in whatever you do next.”

The chippy had earned a loyal following, with customers frequently praising the friendly staff and delicious food. One Google reviewer noted, “We are gluten free and always have great food as everything is gluten free!” Another diner enjoyed a variety of dishes beyond the classic cod and chips, saying, “We had battered sausage, chicken wings, garlic mushrooms (the garlic mayo is addictive!), and Katsu chicken and chips. Really tasty and very friendly service.”

While Farrington’s Fish & Chip Shop has now closed, the farm remains a vibrant family-friendly venue with plenty to offer visitors in other ways.
