‘One of the world’s best’ – Thomas du Toit shines in Bath Rugby’s victory over Saracens

Thomas du Toit’s impactful 40-minute cameo from the bench was pivotal as Bath Rugby secured a 31-22 win over Saracens, a performance lauded by Bath’s head of rugby, Johann van Graan. The South African tighthead prop revitalized Bath’s scrum, turning what had been a struggling set-piece into a dominant force that earned crucial penalties and ultimately laid the foundation for victory.

Bath now look ahead to the Champions Cup quarter-finals against Northampton, buoyed by strong second-half tries from England backs Henry Arundell, Joe Cokanasiga, Ben Spencer, and Ollie Lawrence at the Recreation Ground. However, it was Du Toit’s introduction at halftime that changed the momentum. He immediately clamped down on Saracens’ forward momentum, halting the penalty flow Bath had been conceding and galvanizing their forward pack.

Van Graan praised Du Toit, saying, “If you look at his two years and nine months with Bath, in my view, he has become one of the best players in world rugby. Today against Saracens, he was phenomenal in the scrum, defense, and attack. That’s exactly the kind of player you want when building a squad.”

One of the standout moments came in the 59th minute when Ben Spencer’s try, sparked by a crucial turnover from Saracens’ Andy Onyeama-Christie, swung the momentum heavily in Bath’s favor. “Our defense saved us at a key moment, and that hunger carried us through,” Spencer reflected. “In knockout rugby, sometimes you just have to get the job done, and that’s what we felt today.”

Despite Saracens’ resilience and tactical fightback, including a late second try from Henry Arundell, Bath’s superior class and energy proved decisive. Saracens’ director of rugby, Mark McCall, acknowledged the team’s fluctuating form this season but praised their effort against a top-class opponent: “We showed what we’re capable of and competed toe-to-toe, but ultimately Bath were the better side today.”

With Du Toit returning to South Africa’s Sharks next season, his memorable display against Saracens cements his legacy at Bath as one of the most influential and respected players of recent years.
