One of the Oldest Working Clocks in the UK Found in Somerset Church

Montacute’s St Catherine’s Church may hold one of the oldest working timepieces in the UK, with experts dating its clock back to the 1400s during a recent assessment. The clock, originally thought to have been made in the 1600s, boasts historical significance, as its mechanism predates many known medieval timepieces. A fundraising effort is underway to support the clock’s restoration and the creation of a dedicated exhibition space at the church to showcase its history. Restoration work is set to commence on 20 March 2025, with a rededication ceremony planned upon its return in the summer. The clock, which has been a central part of Montacute village life, has been diligently maintained by dedicated volunteers, including the late Eric Rogers who wound it daily for 67 years.

Churchwarden Nic Lacock, leading the restoration project, emphasized the importance of uncovering the clock’s history and the human stories tied to it. The restoration efforts have also revealed other historical artifacts, such as a set of large iron keys dating back to possibly Reformation times, which will be displayed alongside the clock upon its reinstallation. Through this project, the church aims to celebrate the country’s heritage, strengthen community ties, and provide visitors with the opportunity to witness the historic working timepiece.
