Ofsted Supports Expansion of Dovecote School for SEND Pupils in Bridgwater

Dovecote School, a specialist institution in Shapwick near Bridgwater, has received a strong endorsement from Ofsted following a material change inspection in February 2025. The school, which serves 84 pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND), has sought approval to increase its capacity to 130 students and raise the upper age limit from 18 to 19. Ofsted’s report confirms that these planned expansions are “likely to meet the relevant independent school standards if implemented.”

Jason Goddard, CEO of Dovecote School Ltd, expressed enthusiasm about the approval, stating, “We are absolutely delighted that Ofsted has confirmed our ability to meet the independent school standards as we move forward with our expansion plans. This milestone reflects our team’s dedication and the strength of our collaborative vision with parents.”

Dovecote School caters exclusively to pupils with education, health, and care (EHC) plans, many of whom experience communication challenges or social, emotional, and mental health difficulties. Annual day fees range from £68,000 to £82,000, and pupils often join at non-standard times throughout the year.

Inspectors praised the school’s ambitious vision and educational approach, emphasizing its tailored curriculum designed to prepare pupils for adulthood. Each learner follows a personalised pathway aligned with their EHC plan, with ongoing assessments allowing for adjustments in both academic and therapeutic programs. This approach helps pupils develop based on their existing knowledge and abilities.

As the school expands, leaders are enhancing the curriculum by broadening academic qualifications. Ofsted noted that staff possess the expertise needed to successfully implement new subjects and tailor learning experiences to student needs. The school’s curriculum development will continue to be closely monitored to ensure quality as capacity grows.

The school also prioritises personal, social, health, and economic (PSHE) education. Pupils acquire essential life skills, including journey planning and career preparation, with access to information on further education and apprenticeships. Enrichment activities support cultural development; initiatives include a community café, visits to local care homes, and opportunities for older students to engage in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme.

Safeguarding remains a standout strength at Dovecote School. The proprietor ensures a comprehensive safeguarding culture with an up-to-date policy that aligns with the latest statutory guidance. Regular staff training and vigilant monitoring of behaviour and attendance allow the school to take “timely and appropriate action” whenever concerns arise.

In summary, Ofsted’s findings affirm that Dovecote School is well positioned to meet the Education (Independent School Standards) Regulations 2014 concerning its proposed expansion. The school, now operating from a new site adjacent to its original premises at Church Farm, Church Road, Shapwick, continues to be led by headteacher Neil Gage and chair Jason Goddard.
