A nursery in North Somerset has gained recognition from Ofsted for its comprehensive curriculum catering to the needs of disabled children and those with special educational requirements. Charlton Nursery, situated in Flax Bourton and established in 2010, has been lauded for its services after receiving a ‘good’ rating following a thorough inspection in March.
The facility, which accommodates up to 101 children under the age of four, received positive evaluations across all categories during the visit on March 5.
Ofsted commended the nursery for facilitating the development of motor skills in infants and empowering them to make choices during playtime. However, the report also highlighted the need for the nursery to ensure that group activities effectively engage all children at an appropriate learning level.

The regulatory body stated, “The inviting environment and positive interactions from staff motivate children to learn and make choices about their play. They enter happily and are keen to learn. Older children greatly enjoy traditional stories such as Jack and the Beanstalk, displaying attentive listening and confident participation.”
Ofsted also praised the “knowledgeable management” at the nursery, emphasizing their empowerment of staff to create a tailored curriculum meeting the needs of all children, including those with special educational requirements and those learning English as an additional language.
The report further highlighted the formation of strong bonds between children and staff, the provision of consistent support and reassurance to infants, and the creation of a safe and secure environment for play activities.
Despite the positive assessment, Ofsted indicated the need for improvements in group activities, emphasizing the importance of effectively engaging all children and considering the appropriate group size.
