Ofsted Praises Pyrland School’s Swift Transformation After Leadership Changes

Ofsted inspectors have lauded Pyrland School in Taunton for its rapid turnaround, noting a “harmonious environment” and significantly better pupil behaviour in their recent visit.

The secondary school was re-inspected at the end of September after substantial leadership changes earlier this year, marking a follow-up to a January 2025 inspection that raised concerns about education quality and student conduct.

The latest report praises the school’s “rapidly improving” educational provision, emphasizing a well-structured curriculum now designed to close learning gaps. Inspectors observed, “The curriculum clearly identifies key knowledge pupils need. Learning is sequenced effectively so pupils build on prior knowledge and skills.”

A renewed emphasis on literacy features prominently, including the introduction of a phonics programme aimed at supporting struggling readers. “Leaders have prioritised reading, ensuring pupils engage daily to boost fluency and foster a love for texts,” the report adds.

Central to Pyrland’s progress is the backing of the Midsomer Norton Schools Partnership (MNSP), the multi-academy trust deployed to support the school’s recovery. “The MNSP trust has provided extensive external expertise, helping the school address serious challenges identified in the earlier inspection,” the report states.

School leaders have effectively leveraged trust resources and collaboration to enhance curriculum planning and improve pupil behaviour.

Executive headteacher Mark Lawrence commented, “I’m immensely proud of our Pyrland community. This rapid improvement reflects the dedication of our staff, the support of our students, and their families.

“Pyrland is a remarkable community school, and these positive Ofsted findings mark a significant turning point. We look forward to building on this success.”
