First Steps Opportunity Pre School in Keynsham has earned an ‘Outstanding’ rating from Ofsted, receiving high acclaim in a report published on October 17. The pre-school, which caters to children aged two to four with special needs, was recognized for its exceptional support and compassionate staff.
Inspectors highlighted the remarkable care provided, noting, “Children and families receive an exceptionally high level of support. Staff have very high aspirations for children and inspire this in all those that work with them.” The report emphasized how parents appreciate the nurturing environment, describing it as a relief to find such dedicated support for their children.
With 33 children enrolled, staff focus intensively on fostering independence and emotional regulation. The report praises the skillful and patient approach to managing behaviors and sensory needs. For instance, children transition from frustration to calmness through tailored sensory activities, such as being gently spun in a chair surrounded by their favorite toys. The report shares examples such as setting up small tables for children hesitant to join group snacks and moving musical instruments outdoors to ease transitions. These sensitive adjustments help children develop confidence and engage more fully.
Safeguarding measures and children’s welfare were also praised. Staff work closely with professionals to meet complex health needs, ensuring safety and well-being with compassion and care even in sensitive situations.
