Office Block Transformed into Bath’s New Police Station

Bath is preparing to welcome a fully modernized police station, restoring a central hub for law enforcement in the city.

Since the closure of Bath’s former police station in 2015, policing has been divided between two locations. Lewis House, situated opposite the old station on Manvers Street, currently hosts the neighbourhood policing team and enquiry desk under the name “Bath Police Station,” while response teams operate from a base on Lower Bristol Road.

This fragmentation is coming to an end as Avon & Somerset Police undertake significant renovations at the long-vacant Plymouth House office block on Monmouth Street. Purchased in 2024, the building received planning approval in October 2025 to be transformed into Bath’s new central police station.

According to the planning application, “Upgrading this centrally located building will strengthen the operational capabilities of Avon & Somerset Police, enabling effective support and safeguarding of the Bath community.”

Extensive improvements are underway, including replacing numerous windows and the roof to enhance security, energy efficiency, and overall building quality. The previous entrance canopy has been removed to prevent unauthorized access, and plans are in motion to install new “Bath Police Station” signs similar to those at Lewis House.

Security enhancements include enclosing the external rear staircase and installing higher fences with a new sliding gate around the car park to protect police vehicles. Additionally, a bike store will encourage sustainable commuting among officers and staff.

Amenities such as an out-of-hours telephone and a knife surrender bin are planned at the entrance. However, interior floor plans submitted in the planning documents have largely been kept confidential for security reasons.

The acquisition of Plymouth House was a key initiative under former Conservative Police and Crime Commissioner Mark Shelford, who was succeeded by Labour’s Clare Moody in 2024.

Originally, the station’s opening targeted summer 2025, but this timeline was revised in June 2025 to summer 2026. The extensive renovation work is expected to take approximately nine months following the October 2025 approval.

Chief Inspector Scott Hill emphasized the importance of the new facility, stating, “Our priority is to provide the best service for the community, which means ensuring our officers and staff have efficient, suitable facilities. Plymouth House will unite neighbourhood and response teams under one roof in a modern, fit-for-purpose environment, empowering us to deliver outstanding policing in Bath.”
