Obsessive Man Controlled Ex-Partner, Leaving Her Feeling Helpless and Trapped

James Nash, 40, from Marlborough, subjected his ex-partner to relentless control and intimidation from October 2022 through February 2024. During this period, Nash closely monitored her every move—checking her phone, repeatedly calling her at work, and showing up unannounced at her workplace. He demanded proof of her whereabouts by forcing her to enable live location tracking on her phone and restrict her communications with friends and family. He even took control of the key to her property, further limiting her independence.

In a victim impact statement, the woman, in her 30s, revealed the profound fear and isolation she endured: “I was always frightened that I’d do something wrong and scared James would lose his temper. I was on edge all the time, feeling useless, helpless and completely trapped. I couldn’t see friends or family, or even go to work without him following me. Nowhere felt private or safe. My confidence has been shattered. Though counseling has helped somewhat, I still have a long way to go.”

Following her courageous report to the police, Nash was arrested and charged with controlling and coercive behaviour. He pleaded guilty at his March hearing.

On June 6, at Winchester Crown Court, Nash was sentenced to two years’ imprisonment, suspended for two years. He must complete 80 hours of unpaid work and attend up to 26 rehabilitation sessions. Additionally, a five-year restraining order was issued against him.

Detective Constable Dan England described Nash’s actions as “serious, substantial abuse” that left the victim constantly fearful, even at work. He commended her bravery in reporting the abuse and reaffirmed Wiltshire Police’s commitment to supporting victims and prosecuting offenders of controlling behaviour and domestic abuse.
