The Bay Tree, a cherished Grade-II listed pub in Castle Cary, Somerset, will serve its final pint on Sunday, October 5. After more than 27 years under the stewardship of licensees Rennie and their team, the pub is closing permanently due to ongoing financial challenges.
Announcing the closure on social media, Rennie expressed deep regret but cited the current turbulent economic climate as a key factor. “Costings are through the roof,” Rennie wrote, explaining how rising expenses have made the business unsustainable. The team also announced their retirement from pub management.
The Bay Tree has been a cornerstone of the local community, consistently earning a 5-star hygiene rating and holding the title of the number one place to eat in Castle Cary on TripAdvisor for six years running. Rennie extended heartfelt thanks to loyal staff and customers, many of whom have become friends over the decades.

The pub has now been listed for sale on Rightmove, with an asking price of £465,000. Patrons are advised that, as stock runs down before closing, menu and drink options will be limited during the final days.
