The Notts Outlaws kicked off their Metro Bank One-Day Cup campaign with a convincing four-wicket victory over Somerset, powered by impressive half-centuries from captain Haseeb Hameed (66 off 79 balls) and Freddie McCann, who notched his List A career-best with 70 runs from 82 balls. Chasing Somerset’s total of 258 for nine, Notts reached 259 for six with 32 balls remaining at the John Fretwell Sports Complex, continuing their strong record at this venue with a 10th win in 16 List A matches.
Somerset, semifinalists in 2025, experienced an early setback when Brett Hutton dismissed Archie Vaughan off the fifth delivery. Despite a promising start with the score at 160 for two after 35 overs, Somerset’s innings faltered, losing six wickets for just 27 runs. Migael Pretorius’s four wickets for 41 runs played a critical role in restricting Somerset’s total.
Tom Lammonby provided a solid foundation for Somerset, scoring a confident 92 off 109 balls, while debutant Savin Perera contributed 58 runs from 84 deliveries. However, Somerset’s 102-run partnership failed to convert into a match-winning total. Notts left-arm spinner Joe Pocklington’s three for 28 dismantled the middle order, breaking key partnerships.

Perera, who made his senior debut at 27 and brings significant Second XI experience across ten counties, showcased elegant off-side drives and eight boundaries before falling to an off-spinner’s sharp catch by McCann. Lammonby started steadily, reaching his half-century from 80 balls before falling in an ambitious attempt for a tenth boundary.
Several Somerset batsmen, including Josh Thomas (27), Johnny Connell (24 on senior debut), and Kian Roberts (injured during the match), were dismissed trying to accelerate the scoring. Pocklington, effective with the ball in the final overs, also took wickets of key players like Migael Pretorius and Jack Leach.
In the run chase, Notts began steadily at 61 for one after 10 overs but lost early wickets, including Ben Slater who was caught after a cut shot off Jake Ball. Ball, a former Welbeck player and Somerset captain, led the side in place of the injured Lewis Goldsworthy. McCann played an aggressive innings with clever reverse sweeps and powerful strokes before falling to Pretorius.
Pretorius briefly threatened Notts’ chase by taking three quick wickets, including South African wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne and captain Hameed. However, Lyndon James, dropped early in his innings, steadied the chase with critical boundaries, securing the win for Notts.
Freddie McCann reflected on the victory: “Getting off to a strong start at home feels great. It got tense towards the end, but Lyndon James’s timely boundaries put pressure back on Somerset. Our bowling unit, especially Joe Pocklington with his five overs at the death, performed exceptionally well to keep their score manageable. We always believed 258 was a chaseable target.”
Somerset’s Jake Ball acknowledged the team’s shortcomings with the bat but praised the bowlers: “We came up short with the bat, and a few more runs could have put more pressure on the opposition at the end. Our bowlers, particularly Migael Pretorius with his four wickets, kept fighting hard. Captaining my old club is something I’ll always cherish. We’ve welcomed new players who have performed well, and with some improvements, we believe we can be strong contenders in the tournament.”
