‘Nothing but pride’ for Yeovil Town players despite two late heartbreaks

Yeovil Town manager Billy Rowley expressed immense pride in his players despite the Glovers once again conceding a late equaliser, resulting in a 1-1 draw for the second consecutive week at the start of their National League season.

Stephen Walker opened the scoring for Yeovil on 19 minutes, marking his first goal at this level and giving the team an early advantage. However, the dynamics shifted on 65 minutes when Joe Gubbins was sent off after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Yeovil to defend with ten men.

As the match approached its conclusion, Carlisle United capitalised in the 96th minute, snatching a late equaliser and denying Yeovil victory. This followed a similar scenario the previous week where the Glovers drew 1-1 against Scunthorpe United.

Despite dropping four points from games against last season’s play-off hopefuls, Rowley maintained that his admiration for his recently assembled squad outweighs any frustration.

“It’s frustrating, but it’s part of football,” Rowley reflected after the game. “It’s a long season. I’m nothing but proud of the lads on the pitch today.”

He added, “It’s a shame we couldn’t celebrate a 1-0 win at the end. For the second week in a row, we’ve conceded a goal out of nowhere. When we went down to ten men, Carlisle had more of the ball, which is natural. But I think they entered our box only once or twice in the entire second half – and one of those occasions led to the goal in the 96th minute.”

Rowley emphasised the unpredictability of such moments, saying, “I told the boys we’ll be giving out some late equalisers and winners this season. We had one against Sutton late last season too – it’s just part of the game.”

The manager highlighted the strong bond developing between the team and supporters. “A supporter in his 60s told me he has been coming here for 30 years and that this is the most connected and joyful team he’s seen in a long time. I shared that with the players, and I think it’s part of the journey we’re on.”

He praised the players’ commitment throughout the match: “Every single player gave everything they had. They’ve worked hard, especially considering we faced two teams who made the play-offs last season, with top managers and exceptional players at that level.”

“To be disappointed with two draws shows we’re on the right path,” Rowley continued, “but we’re still frustrated we couldn’t secure a win today. We’ll be working hard to consistently deliver good performances.”

Rowley also commended the Huish Park crowd for their passionate support during Yeovil’s first home match of the 2026/27 National League campaign. “The fans have been incredible since we arrived. I look forward to coming here every time. They were probably the man of the match today, as the lads fought hard to reach every ball,” he said.

Reflecting on the team’s performance, he noted, “We ran our socks off and worked incredibly hard. Perhaps we could have been better with the ball, but it’s just a shame we couldn’t hold on to the lead.”

Yeovil Town will next face Gateshead at Huish Park on Saturday, as the National League season continues at home in South Somerset.
