North Somerset Council is aiming to leverage AI technology to reduce administrative workload as outlined in its new “digital technology strategy” set to be presented to the council executive on April 30. The twelve-page document lays out the council’s mission to establish a digital-first approach, enabling it to adapt to the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The strategy outlines the council’s initiatives for digital services and IT infrastructure over the next five years, with a specific focus on AI implementation. It emphasizes the need to embrace the transformational impact of artificial intelligence and machine learning in the public sector, stating, “We need to ensure we are ready to embrace this change and be in a position to harness its potential for public good.”
Furthermore, the strategy highlights the council’s commitment to leveraging AI and technological advancements to replace manual processes and administrative tasks, ultimately enhancing the delivery of services. It also details various digital objectives, including the transition to a fully digital operating model, the provision of a user-centric experience, default adoption of cloud technology, and the automation of the FOI (Freedom of Information) process.

However, amid these digital aspirations, the council faces financial constraints, particularly due to unprecedented demands in social care, leading to cuts in various services. The strategy acknowledges this challenging financial situation and emphasizes the need to prioritize foundational and beneficial projects given the restricted funding for non-essential initiatives.
North Somerset Council is not the sole local authority exploring the potential of AI. A neighboring council, Bath and North East Somerset Council, has allocated £65k for AI utilization in resident-facing services in its 2025/26 budget. Despite initial skepticism, a leading councillor vouched for the substantial benefits derived from targeted investments in AI technology.
The executive meeting to discuss North Somerset Council’s digital technology strategy is scheduled for April 30 at 6 pm in Weston-super-Mare Town Hall’s New Council Chamber.
