North Somerset Councillor Resigns from Lib Dems Citing Party’s Shift to the Left

Ash Cartman, a longstanding Liberal Democrat councillor for Long Ashton on North Somerset Council and two-time parliamentary candidate, has announced his resignation from the party after over 15 years of membership. Cartman expressed that the party’s increasing shift to the left has made him uncomfortable and prompted his decision to leave.

Having joined the Lib Dems during the coalition government era, Cartman was inspired by the collaborative leadership style of Nick Clegg and David Cameron. However, he now feels the party no longer represents that spirit of change, labeling it as part of the political establishment.

In a letter to party leader Ed Davey, Cartman acknowledged the recent electoral successes of the Lib Dems but criticized the party for lacking a substantive message. He stated, “Our policies fail to grapple with the deep, systemic challenges facing our country, offering no bold vision to inspire hope for a better future.” He also condemned what he perceives as the party’s timid approach in confronting the “profoundly inadequate Labour government,” which has left him deeply disillusioned.

Cartman further lamented that the Liberal Democrats appear to serve primarily as a political refuge for tactical voters dissatisfied with other parties. Despite his departure from the party, he expressed “enormous respect” for his local colleagues and friends.

Previously, Cartman left the Liberal Democrat group on North Somerset Council in January 2025 due to disagreements over the controversial Epic development near Long Ashton, though he remained a party member at that time. After rejoining the council group, he now indicates he intends to continue working within the group despite quitting the party. He cited his desire not to undermine the leadership of Mike Bell, the council leader and group head, whom he regards as the best leader for the council.
